What is the List of Results? The List of Results displays the results of your searches in summary form. Each result in the list consists of:
From here you can choose to see the remaining results of your search or to view the full text of an article. In what order is the List of Results displayed? Can I change the order? Results are listed in reverse chronological order by default with most recent articles appearing first. Click on the relevance link to resort the list by relevance. Relevance is determined by several factors, including the number of times your search term appears in a record. No results were returned. Why?Searching NewsUK is an automated process, and so you have to be very clear on what you want to find.
I think I may have misspelled one of my search terms. How do I search on alternative spellings from the List of Results? If you have executed a search using the Search News box, but NewsUK cannot find instances of your search term in the database, its spell checking function will display a list of the top 3 alternative spellings for which there are matches in the database. If one of the suggestions matches the term you meant to search for, you can search again using the corrected term from the List of Results. To repeat a misspelled search using one of the suggested terms:
How can I view the full text for an article in the List of Results? The List of Articles is only the first stage to seeing the complete article text. Click on an underlined article title to be taken to the Full Article. Where relevant each result in the list includes a line of text containing the first occurrence of your search term(s). This will help you to identify those articles which are likely to prove most useful to you. NewsUK also has PDF versions of articles for some of its magazines. If a PDF version of an article is available a Full text – PDF link will be shown. Click on this link to open the PDF article in a new browser window. Too many results have been retrieved! How can I narrow them down?As explained above, the most useful results should be at the top of the list. You can, however, try repeating your search, but this time be more specific. Try adding more keywords, or use the Advanced Search radio button options to search for all words or an exact phrase. You can also try restricting your search to the title of the article, a specific writer, date range or publication using the Advanced Search page. How do I view articles listed after number 25? Can I change the number of articles displayed on the List of Results page?Articles are listed 25 to a page. To view articles listed after the 25th entry, you can change the number of results per page to 50 by clicking the relevant link at the top of the page. Alternatively, you can move through the List of Articles pages by clicking the page number links at the foot of the page. How do I view a List of Results for a single content type only? The List of Results displays all records in all categories (national and regional newspapers, magazines, news images and news topics). If you know you are only interested in results from a particular category, you can view results from that category only. All categories for which there are results are listed on the left-hand side of the main List of Results page, together with an indication of the number of results in that category. To view the List of Results for a particular category, click the underlined category name. You will be taken to the Category List of Results page, listing only the results from the category you are interested in. You can go back to your original List of Results page if necessary by clicking the Back to full List of Results link. How can I add a search to My Archive? From the List of Results following an Advanced or News search, you can save the terms of your search to the Saved Searches area of My Archive. If you have not already logged in to My Archive with your username and password, you will need to do so. See here for more information on creating a My Archive user profile. You can save a search from the List of Results by clicking the Save search link at the top of the page. If you have not created any folders in My Archive, you will be prompted to enter a name for a new folder in which you wish to save your search. Type the name of the folder and click Save. If you have already created folders in My Archive, you can either choose to save the search to an existing folder by choosing from the drop-down list, or create a new folder as shown above. I've finished my search. What now?You can execute a new search from the List of Results using the Search News box at the top of the page. Simply type in the word(s) you wish to search for and click the Search button. Alternatively, if you have constructed a complex search using the Advanced Search page and you wish to edit that search, click the Search again? link at the top of the List of Results page. Once you have finished searching, you can go back to the Home page to see what else NewsUK has to offer. If your library is also subscribed to KnowUK an additional link will appear on the List of Results after a Search News Search allowing you to execute the same search in KnowUK, our reference service. |
