NewsUK Help: List of Results

What is the List of Results?

The List of Results displays the results of your searches in summary form. Each result in the list consists of:

  • A number that identifies the position of the result in the list.
  • An icon indicating which content type the item belongs to (regional or national newspapers, magazines, news images and news topics).
  • The title of the article, which is a hyperlink to the full text of the article.
  • The newspaper or magazine the article comes from.
  • The date of publication, author name and start page number.
  • The first occurrence of your search term will appear highlighted in a line of context where relevant.

From here you can choose to see the remaining results of your search or to view the full text of an article.

In what order is the List of Results displayed? Can I change the order?

Results are listed in reverse chronological order by default with most recent articles appearing first.

Click on the relevance link to resort the list by relevance. Relevance is determined by several factors, including the number of times your search term appears in a record.

No results were returned. Why?

Searching NewsUK is an automated process, and so you have to be very clear on what you want to find.

  • Check that you haven't misspelled any search terms. You can review your spelling options and search on alternative terms- see below for instructions.
You can also use a 'wildcard operator' if you are unsure how to spell a word or want to find related words.
  • By default NewsUK searches recent news only (the date range is indicated at the top of the List of Results). Try changing the date range of your search from the Advanced Search page or click on the Search complete news archive link after a News Search.
  • If you chose a date range and publication from the Advanced Search page, check that coverage exists for the relevant publication for the range you selected (click the coverage information link on the Advanced Search page).
  • Have you abbreviated a name? Try typing in the person's full name.

I think I may have misspelled one of my search terms. How do I search on alternative spellings from the List of Results?

If you have executed a search using the Search News box, but NewsUK cannot find instances of your search term in the database, its spell checking function will display a list of the top 3 alternative spellings for which there are matches in the database. If one of the suggestions matches the term you meant to search for, you can search again using the corrected term from the List of Results.

To repeat a misspelled search using one of the suggested terms:

  1. Choose the search term you wish to search for from the list of spelling options at the top of the List of Results by clicking it with the mouse.
  2. Click the Search button.
  3. You will be taken to a List of Results for your new search.

How can I view the full text for an article in the List of Results?

The List of Articles is only the first stage to seeing the complete article text. Click on an underlined article title to be taken to the Full Article.

Where relevant each result in the list includes a line of text containing the first occurrence of your search term(s). This will help you to identify those articles which are likely to prove most useful to you.

NewsUK also has PDF versions of articles for some of its magazines. If a PDF version of an article is available a Full text – PDF link will be shown. Click on this link to open the PDF article in a new browser window.

Too many results have been retrieved! How can I narrow them down?

As explained above, the most useful results should be at the top of the list.

You can, however, try repeating your search, but this time be more specific. Try adding more keywords, or use the Advanced Search radio button options to search for all words or an exact phrase. You can also try restricting your search to the title of the article, a specific writer, date range or publication using the Advanced Search page.

How do I view a List of Results for a single content type only?

The List of Results displays all records in all categories (national and regional newspapers, magazines, news images and news topics). If you know you are only interested in results from a particular category, you can view results from that category only.

All categories for which there are results are listed on the left-hand side of the main List of Results page, together with an indication of the number of results in that category. To view the List of Results for a particular category, click the underlined category name. You will be taken to the Category List of Results page, listing only the results from the category you are interested in. You can go back to your original List of Results page if necessary by clicking the Back to full List of Results link.
