What can I do from the Advanced Search page?The Advanced Search page gives you more control over how you search NewsUK. For example, you can narrow your search to a particular publication, or search for articles containing any or all of your search terms, or an exact phrase. A summary of the results of your search is displayed on the List of Results page. How do I search for all newspaper articles containing a particular word or words?
You will be taken to a List of Results page displaying a summary of the articles found by your search. Also see Examples and tips below. You can choose from the following options:
How do I search for all newspaper articles written by a particular writer?
For example, type Martin Woollacott or type Nigel Slater into the Writer box. How do I search for all newspaper articles within a particular date range?Note: By default NewsUK searches recent news only (the date range is indicated on the Advanced Search page). If you wish to include older articles in your search or restrict the range further, please use the date range options as outlined below:
Tip: events are reported the day after they take place, so for example the May Day riots appear in articles published on May 2, 2001. Tip: to restrict your search to articles published on a particular day, select the same start and end date. Alternatively, use the View Issue feature to list all articles in a particular issue of your chosen newspaper or magazine. How do I restrict my search to a particular resource or group of resources?By default, NewsUK searches across all resources and publications. However, you can restrict your search to a particular resource/publication using the checkboxes on the Advanced Search page. Resources are listed under National Newspapers, Regional Newspapers and Weekly Magazines (or Magaines if you are subscribed to the Magazine module); you can also search for News Images and News Topics. To restrict your search to a specific publication or resource, click the checkbox next to the item you wish to select. To restrict your search to a single resource or group of publications, click the checkbox next to the relevant heading. How do I search for words that are related in meaning or spelling?NewsUK will automatically search for words that are similar in meaning or spelling to your search terms. For example, typing in 'color' will retrieve instances of the word 'colour' as well as instances of the word 'color'. Similarly, typing in 'farmer' will also retrieve instances of the words 'farming', 'farm' etc. How do I search for variations on a search term?NewsUK allows you to find variations on a word or number by using the following characters, referred to as 'wildcard operators', to represent one or more characters in a word or number:
Type the first few letters (or stem) of the word in the Search box followed by the wildcard operator and click the Search button. Any entry containing variations on the word you typed will be listed. Tips and hints…How do I find all articles containing the word 'riots'?
The List of Results page will be displayed, listing all the articles containing the word 'riots'. Tip: If you want to search for more than one word you don't have to divide up your search terms with a comma, a space between your words will do. How do I find obituaries written about the Queen Mother?
The List of Results page will be displayed, listing all instances of the words 'Queen Mother' in obituaries only. Tip: NewsUK will search for exactly the words you have typed in. So entering articles referring to Israel will produce a list of all works which contain the words 'articles', 'referring', 'to' and 'Israel'. Tip: You do not need to type an accented letter, as they are found if you type the unaccented form; for example, to search for rôle you can type role. Tip: All searches are case-insensitive, so you don't have to know whether a word should be capitalised or not. For example, there is no difference between Carr, carr or CaRr. Tip: If you would like to find words that can sometimes have an apostrophe and sometimes not e.g. womens and women’s, search using truncation – entering women* in the search box will find both. |
