What is NewsUK?

NewsUK is an online service developed to provide national and regional news, combining the most popular British newspaper titles in one database.

What can NewsUK help me do?

NewsUK is the ideal tool to keep up-to-date with day-to-day information, looking through various established newspapers and magazines giving the user an array of views and opinions on one story line or subject.

Our subscribers use us to:

  • Research college assignments.
  • Answer queries at the reference desk.
  • Find reports about schools performance.
  • Keep up to date with current business trends.
  • Read the latest book reviews.
  • Follow the latest political debates.
  • Discover the nearest art exhibitions in your area.
  • Read travel articles about specific destinations in the UK or abroad.

What does NewsUK contain?

NewsUK contains 115 newspapers and magazines falling under three categories (see the full content list here):

  • National newspapers
  • Regional newspapers
  • Magazines

A small number of articles cannot be reproduced in NewsUK; articles that, for legal reasons, have to be removed or articles that were originally syndicated from other sources in the print copy. Newspapers' supplements are included in NewsUK but not pictures, graphics, cartoons or adverts. We only include the main edition of regional newspapers and not supplementary local editions.

43 additional magazines are included in the NewsUK Magazine Module, available as an additional subscription option.

How does NewsUK work?

NewsUK is easy to use. Users can:

  • Search across the titles in NewsUK for information on a person, a headline, a place, etc.
  • Get a broad range of views and opinions on a particular news story.
  • Find information on local and national events.
  • News topics enable you to get in-depth background information on a range of contemporary issues.
  • When subscribing to both NewsUK and KnowUK, you can cross-search both products.

News articles are fully keyword-searchable and can either be printed off in a user-friendly format or e-mailed for later reference. NewsUK also enables you to bookmark each article individually with the help of durable links.

For more in-depth information on how to use NewsUK, take a look at our User Guide which takes you through every aspect of NewsUK in a step-by-step way.

How often is NewsUK updated?

NewsUK is updated every weekday. Most newspapers are added to the service the day after publication, so there will always be a time lag between an article appearing in the print edition of a newspaper and its appearance in this service. Headlines on the home page are selected from amongst the latest articles added to the service.

News Topics pages are updated once a week with recent headlines, and with new images and background reading once a month.

Who uses it?

NewsUK is the ideal resource for UK public libraries. It is suitable for a wide range of users, from professional researchers to people who are new to the ‘net.
